From 1998 – 2002 I led a team of designers in the development of the “Northwest Louisiana Commerce Center”. We were hired by a company called Valentec, who were working for the Department of Defense on the commercial reuse of the Louisiana Army Ammunition Plant. We used Permaculture Design Principles to create a regional strategy consisting of various ecologically based business plans. We successfully attracted a composting/vermicomposting operation and a company that utilized waste-wood in the production of office furniture. We hosted a Bill Mollison workshop and a Permaculture Design Certificate Course. Our plans were significant’y effected by the events of 9/11/01, when access to the facility were greatly impacted. Some of our design activities continue to be encouraged in the area by the “Farm of Cultural Crossroads”.
